About Ed Carpenter Racing

Competing in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES with drivers Ed Carpenter, Christian Rasmussen and Alexander Rossi

A new team arrived on the grid in 2012: Ed Carpenter Racing. Ed Carpenter, the only/owner driver in the field, led his team to victory in its first year as he took the checkered flag in the season finale. Now with over 400 race starts, 2025 is Ed Carpenter Racing’s 14th season of NTT INDYCAR SERIES competition.

ECR began as a single car team with Carpenter himself behind the wheel. After driving full time in 2012 and 2013, he shifted his focus exclusively to ovals. Carpenter, an Indianapolis native, solidified his status as a hometown favorite when he won back-to-back pole positions for the 2013 and 2014 Indianapolis 500s. The team grew to two full-time entries in 2015 while competing as CFH Racing; prior to the 2016 season, Carpenter resumed ownership and ECR returned to the grid with the Nos. 20 and 21.

In recent years, ECR has expanded to three cars for the Indianapolis 500. The team qualified at least one car on the front row of the Indianapolis 500 for nine of 11 consecutive years. Carpenter earned his third Indy 500 pole position in 2018 and led the most laps of all drivers before a runner-up finish. In recent years, Rinus VeeKay led the team’s efforts by earning three front row starting positions, including starting 2nd in 2023. VeeKay is also ECR’s most recent race winner, capturing his first victory in May of 2021 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

Looking towards the future, ECR has welcomed veteran driver and Indianapolis 500 champion Alexander Rossi to the team for the 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season. Rossi will be behind the wheel of the No. 20 Chevrolet and will be joined by teammate Christian Rasmussen, now full-time driver of the No. 21 Chevrolet. Rasmussen completed an impressive rookie season in the No. 20, including earning the distinction of the highest finishing rookie in the 2024 Indianapolis 500 field. Carpenter will round out the team’s three-car lineup in the 2025 Indianapolis 500 as he completes in his hometown race for the 22nd time.

Today, ECR’s ownership group is comprised of Indianapolis businessmen Carpenter, Ted Gelov, Tony George and Stuart Reed. Gelov, owner of Heartland Food Products Group, is the newest addition to the team. Heartland FPG is best known for their consumer brands Splenda and Java House Coffee.

Day-to-day operations at ECR are under the direction of team president Tim Broyles. Brent “Woody” Harvey works side-by-side with Broyles as team manager. Veteran race engineer Eric Cowdin joined ECR for the 2024 season as Director of Development while Matt Barnes leads as Chief Engineer. Additionally, Barnes and Pete Craik each serve as lead engineer on an ECR’s entry. Jeff Grahn is Chief Mechanic with Jimmie Johnson and Austin Shepherd as the two Crew Chiefs. Nearly a dozen of the team’s 50 full-time employees are original hires, including Broyles, Harvey, Barnes and Johnson.
